God and Country

Friday, May 28th, 2010

In Matthew 6:24 Jesus says

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.  You cannot serve God and money”

Jesus starts with a basis truth and then applies it to a specific example.  So yes, in context this verse deals with serving money.  However that does not take away from the basic truth that Jesus starts with.  That is that “No one can serve two masters”.  You cannot serve God and country and more then you can serve God and money for either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.

How I wish that we could hear preaching on this.  But because our hearts refuse to throw out all of our idols we sing “God bless America” during worship.  Christians used to be killed for refusing to say “caesar is lord” now we proudly say the pledge of allegiance during worship.

Anyways, guess I’m going t0 be worshiping with Dave’s church this weekend.  I’m sure the grandparents will love to have Marci  :)

Genesis 20:8-18

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

So Abimelech rose early in the morning and called all his servants and told them all these things. And the men were very much afraid.  Then Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, “What have you done to us? And how have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and my kingdom a great sin? You have done to me things that ought not to be done.”  And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What did you see, that you did this thing?”  Abraham said, “I did it because I thought, There is no fear of God at all in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.  Besides, she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father though not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife.  And when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, I said to her, ‘This is the kindness you must do me: at every place to which we come, say of me, He is my brother.’”

Then Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and male servants and female servants, and gave them to Abraham, and returned Sarah his wife to him.  And Abimelech said, “Behold, my land is before you; dwell where it pleases you.”  To Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver. It is a sign of your innocence in the eyes of all who are with you, and before everyone you are vindicated.”  Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, and also healed his wife and female slaves so that they bore children.  For the Lord had closed all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.

Abraham was in a place where he should not have been doing things that he should not have been doing.  And what happened?  He brought a curse upon the people.  Do you think that this applies to Christians today?  If we go places where we should not go and do things that we should not do, do we bring curses upon people?  What if Abraham would have been bold and told Abimelech about the Promise that God made with him?  Do you think that Abraham could have brought a blessing to Abimelech and his house hold?

May we not fall under the same fear as Abraham in this passage.  May we boldly proclaim Christ.  No matter what people may say or do to us.

Christ’s Chronology

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.  But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.  For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,

“This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws on their hearts,
and write them on their minds,”

then he adds,

“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”

Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

A sermon by Pastor Don Mason.  Today’s sermon was about time.  Pastor Don had two words the first being Chrono (now the first thing I thought of when he said Chrono was “Chrono Trigger” which is just one of the most awesome games ever!)  and Kairos.  Both words are translated as “time” but they are not the same thing.  The first word Chrono is just normal where the second word Kairos has a specialness about it.  Pastor Don said to think of Kairos like Christmas or Easter or your birthday.  It’s a special occasion.

I think (and I say “I think” because Marci was saying “dada” throughout the sermon and I she had a lot of my attention.) his main point of this sermon was that all the old things was Chrono.  That is that they did not accomplish anything.  The priest would preform their duties day after day after day after day…  And they could never take away sins.  Could never bring us into a relation ship with God.  But Jesus came and brought in the kairos.  All of His life and his death and his resurrection was Kairos.  He did it once for all.

Google Chrome for Linux

I’m so happy.  Chrome has come out for Linux.  I downloaded it yesterday and am using it now.  It works great  :)  I’m getting more and more reasons not to go back to Windows everyday.

Genesis 20:3-7

Friday, May 21st, 2010

But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man’s wife.”  Now Abimelech had not approached her. So he said, “Lord, will you kill an innocent people?  Did he not himself say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands I have done this.”  Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that you have done this in the integrity of your heart, and it was I who kept you from sinning against me. Therefore I did not let you touch her.  Now then, return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, so that he will pray for you, and you shall live. But if you do not return her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours.”

This is amazing.  Did you catch it?  God said “it was I who kept you from sinning against me”.  God keeps us from being as bad as we could be.    That is that it is only by His grace that we are not worse sinners then we are.  It would be easy for me to think that I would never have treated slaves like people did or treated Jews like the Nazis did.  But that is not true, if it was not for God’s grace I would be much worse then any of them.

This idea is also known as the “T” in TULIP.  That is
Total Depravity (also known as Total Inability and Original Sin)
Unconditional Election
Limited Atonement (also known as Particular Atonement)
Irresistible Grace
Perseverance of the Saints (also known as Once Saved Always Saved)
