A sermon by Pastor Don Mason

Deuteronomy 18:14-21 & Luke 4:14-24

Welcome to Advent, the time of year that we take to reflect on the birth of our Lord Jesus.  This year pastor Don is going to bring us messages on the roles that Jesus fullfills for us.  The first one is that Jesus is our Prophet.  Prophets are people who spoke for God; that is they brought His law (or His will) to the people.  Jesus is the great prophet, he is the very Word of God and always speaks for God.

A Sermon by Pastor Don Mason

We proclaim Him, admonishing the teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.  To thi send I labor struggling with all His energy, which so powerfully works in me.

Colossians 1:28,29

To become a member in the EPC of PC is not a quick process.  We have a 12 week class that teaches the foundations of what we believe.  Some people think this is a bit to much, but the point is to make sure you know who we are and that we know who you are.  Having said that it’s should be no surprise that it’s not to often that we have the new member classes (I think 3 or 4 times a year) but this Sunday was one of those days.  We received eleven new members and Pastor Don’s sermon was to them.  He touched on four area’s of church life.  They are….

1) Worship – This is always a tricky subject.  Everyone has a style of worship that they like and it’s impossible to get a large group of people together who agree on it.  But the most important thing about worship is that it’s done in Spirit and in Truth.  By Spirit we can mean either by the Holy Spirit or in a spirit of humility both are needed for worship.  And the truth is the Truth of the Gospel, the music must not contain errors about God or fallen humanity.

2) Spiritual Growth – Spiritual Growth is a strong point for my church.  We are a teaching church with a high emphases on Biblical doctrine and teaching.  So on the learning side of Spiritual Growth we are rather strong, however Pastor Don did not mention the Spiritual side.  I sorta wanted to say “but what about holiness?”, unfortunately (at least from my point of view) we don’t have a good corporate encouragement of holiness.  So that is something that we need to work on.

3) Fellowship – Fellowship is important to any group and it is vital to a church.  In my experience what you get out of fellowship is what you put into it.  The more you seek to know people the more they will seek to know you and the better relationships you will have.

4) Service – This would be a weak point at the EPC.  The 80/20 rule is totally in effect for us and it is easy for the 20% to get burned out rather easy.   On a personal note I have been actively not doing as much as I have in the past just because I could tell I was starting to get burned.

And that was the sermon for this week.  So lets keep in mind that these are four things that as Christians we need to seek.

Thankfulness and Remembering

Friday, November 21st, 2008

You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm.

Deuteronomy 5:15 (ESV)

We are told to remember what God has done for us. With Thanksgiving next week it seemed like a good time to pause and do just that. To often I find that the whole advent season goes by way to fast. It’s one of the busier times of the year and it’s easy to get caught up in all the hype and miss the bigger picture. So lets take some time to look and remember what God has done for us.

To start with we have Nativity Sets, God Himself came down from heaven and was born as a man. Joseph and Mary have just finished a 80 mile journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem and can not find any place to stay. This forces Mary to give birth to the Creator of the universe in a manger. And no one even knows of this except for a few shepherds.

So let us remember Christ’s humility as Philippians 2:6-7 says “Christ Jesus, who, though He was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.” So let us be humbled as we look upon the birth of our savior.

And we have presents. The wise men came following the star in the sky. Not one of God’s chosen people of Israel followed this star but foreigners from the east. Let us remember from this how fast our hearts can turn from the God whom we love. In Romans 11 Paul speaks of branches being broken off so that we might be grafted in. But he warns us to not become arrogant toward the branches but rather that we should fear the severity of God but that we should see His kindness and continue in His kindness.

And the wise men brought gifts to the new born king. But God gave the real gift. As John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” and Romans 5:8 says “God proved His love for us in that while we were still sinners…” God did not wait for us to make the first move. So as we give presents this Christmas season let us remember that God also gave us a gift. One of love that we did not earn, deserve or even want.

And we have “Happy Holidays” or “Season Greetings”. Let us remember that the world has never wanted this gift from God. Indeed the world is trying to destroy this gift. And there is no end to the evil that they will do to try to destroy it. King Herold ordered that all 2 year old boys and younger be killed. So let us remember that the world hated and rejected Jesus and continue to reject Him to this day.

We have Christmas trees. We should remember why Jesus came to the world. He came to free us from sin. And sin started a long time ago in a garden when Adam and Eve ate from the forbidden tree. This single act brought upon all man kind pain, sickness and death. But we need to remember that it was also upon a tree that Christ died for our sins. It was on the Cross that the price of our sins were paid for and it is by this single act that we are given life (Romans 5:17)

Lastly let us look at the Christmas lights. Let us remember that while Jesus was upon the cross that the sun it self went dark that the earth shook and that the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Let us remember that what men intended as evil, God intended for good (Genesis 50:19). May we remember and have faith in the God who humbled Himself becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross (Philippians 2:8). And as we look at the lights of Christmas may we also remember that Christ has called us the light of the world and may we be obedient to Christ and go forth and let our light shine before all men so that they may give glory to our Father who is in heaven.

Devotional

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Nyssa and my self have started doing devotionals before bed.  We have tried doing some in the past and go for a little bit but then we always stop.  I don’t know why.  We both want to but it’s just hard.  Anyways, we just read #4 in John Piper’s “Life is a Vapor” book.  So please pray for us, that we will be able to keep this going.  We both need to spend more time in the Word and praying and this devotional time will be a good start for us.

As the Gabbie Chews…

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

previously on as the gabbie chews…

“Munch, chew, slobber, chew, chew, crunch” and such was the fate of the cell phone.  And we discovered that neither rug or pillow could stand in the way of this chewing machine.  But what could be next?  Could this chewing rampage continue?  Or was it all behind us?

Now she did not start out this way.  There was a time when she was cute…

And we have tried to get her to stop chewing.  We tried the ‘bitter barrier’ stuff but to be honest it did not work.  It just got over everything (including me and Nyssa, brushing my teeth was horrible) but I guess once gabbie got it in her mouth she figured that it’s not going to get any worse and so she just continued to chew.  And now we get to today.  I know your thinkinng, what could such a cute dog get into??

Yep, she got the love seat.  Last night while Nyssa and my self were fast asleep little did we know that there were things that were going chew in the night.  And chew it did.

So we have decided that it’s time to give up.  Gabbie is going into a cage during the night and while we are at work.  We don’t really want to do it (she’s going to be whining all night) but it’s our last option.  I think she’s just a bad dog and that we should return her and get a new one.  But Nyssa is attached to her, so we are going to keep her.
