Loving Jesus More
Thursday, August 28th, 2008“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
Matthew 10:34-38
This is a hard teaching. But one that all Christians must come to. And for some it’s harder then for others. My dear friend, Elisa’s grandmother just passed away Tuesday. Her grandmother was Jewish (although she spent the last years of her life angry at God). And for Elisa to accept Christ as who He says He is, is for her to accept that her grandmother is in hell. And that’s hard, it’s breaking her heart. But for Elisa to continue to follow Christ she must love Him more than her grandmother, more than her grandfather, more than the rest of her family. And that is why Christ is saying that if we do not love Him more that we are not worthy of Him. We can not be, for we will reject Jesus as the way, and the truth, and the life and that no one, comes to the Father except through Jesus (John 14:6) when we are faced with the death of an unbeliever whom we dearly loved.
I have not had to face this yet. But unless God acts in my family’s hearts, I know that I will. How we need to pray for our unbelieving family. That they will turn from their sins and turn to Christ. But even if they do not, we must always look to Christ. Even though our eyes are full of tears and our hearts are broken; we must always love Christ more than any one else. It is the only way we can follow Him.
