Everything Breaks

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

My air conditioner is broke again.  But I guess when you buy a 15 year old house with a 15 year old air conditioner you can bet on it breaking soon (same with the roof).

My grand dad is refusing to take some of his meds and quiting “cold turkey” on this one can be very dangerous.  So please keep him in your prayers.

Also Nyssa’s grand mother needs prayer.  They found a bone growing out of her jaw and at first they thought it might be because of one of her meds but they just found another one and are thinking that it could be bone cancer.  So please keep Nyssa’s grand mother and our family in your prayers.

So in 1 week I will be turning 30 (Nyssa has a birthday in 2 days but she’s way younger then I am).  Everyone talks about it being a “big one” and about getting older.  Maybe we all wish we could be cursed with vampire super sexiness forever.  I take it as I’m one year closer to being with Jesus.  I’m one year closer to being done with the cursed would.  I’m tired of everything breaking and I know that as I get older my body will start to break more and more.  I think this is what Paul was getting at in Romans 8:18-25 (and his life was much harder than my life).  Or as the old African-American Spiritual says “You can have all of this world, but give me Jesus”

And you know, Jesus was broken once.  The curse that Romans talks about the curse that I deserve, was placed upon Him.  He did nothing wrong and deserved nothing but honor and praise from the Father, but because of His love for us He took upon Himself our curse.  He was broken for us.  But His glory is greater then our sin and the grave could not keep Him.  And so even now when this world is breaking (and everything will break), Jesus will never be broken again.  His life, his joy, his peace is unending.

So yes, you can have all this world, you can have all this brokenness, but give me Jesus.

Most People Really Don’t Like Hymns

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Just an observation.  Most people don’t like hymns.  Even the people who say that they do, don’t really like them.  What they should say is “I like these 50 (or so) hymns”.

Now I don’t want to say that “Holy, Holy, Holy” or “Amazing Grace” or “Nothing But The Blood” are not great hymns.  They are.  In fact out of all the hymns that we sing there is only one that I don’t like “He lives” (…”You ask me how I know he lives, he lives within my heat”…  NO!  Jesus is sitting at the right hand of the father…  Sigh).

But try to get “new” hymns added is like pulling teath.  “Jesus I Come” and “O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus” are two of the best.  But they are not part of that package of 50 (or so) hymns and so we don’t sing them.

I did take me a long time to find this out.  Being new to the church I did not notice that when we sing hymns we only sang the same ones over and over.  I had a hard time trying to get “Before the Throne” to be song at church.  Even when it was it was as a choir song not as a congregation song (I sang along  :)   ).  But maybe in another 50 years I will only want to sing “God of Wonders”..  I’m not sure, but it just seems like a shame that we don’t use the rich collection of songs from past generations.

ApologetiX in Plant City

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

I just wanted to let everyone know that the Christian Parody band ApologetiX will be in Plant City next month on the 19th.  It looks like it might be kinda fun, anyone want to go with?  It’s $10 before the event or $15 at the door. Need to find some one to watch Marci, but I’m sure that will not be to hard :)
