Merry Christmas

Thursday, December 24th, 2009
And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.  And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear.  And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.  And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
Luke 2:8-14

Jesus, our Healer

Thus says the Lord:

“A voice is heard in Ramah,
lamentation and bitter weeping.
Rachel is weeping for her children;
she refuses to be comforted for her children,
because they are no more.”

Jeremiah 31:15

A Sermon by pastor Dave Martin.

To be honest this passage is not something that I have spent a lot of time thinking about.  The first thing is we need to know what Jeremiah is talking about.  Ramah is a little town just outside of Jerusalem (about 3 miles north) and it is the place where during the Babylon invasion the captured Jews were taken to either be 1)killed or 2)take away as exiles to Babylon.  Rachel is the mother of Joseph and Benjamin and is used as in this passage as “a mother of Israel” figure.

Okay so what does this have to do with Christmas?  Matthew quotes Jeremiah in his gospel.  In it he says…

Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:

“A voice was heard in Ramah,
weeping and loud lamentation,
Rachel weeping for her children;
she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.”

Matthew 2:16-18

So we see that just as the Babylons killed and sent the Jews into exile from Ramah so the Jews sent God’s own son into exile and killed children in the town of Bethlehem (about 5 miles south of Jerusalem).

Not all but a lot of the Jews during Jesus time thought very highly of themselves.  They were Abraham’s offspring; God’s very own and special children and as such they believed they were better then the other people.  During the time of Jesus birth the Romans had control over Israel.  Now the Jews expected the Messiah to come and deliver them from the evil Romans.  After all they were God’s special people and they were better then everyone else…

Now I don’t want to focus of the Jews to much because thats not the point that I get from it.  Rather I want to now look at the church.  We are now God’s chosen people and the question is do we think we are better then other people?  Do we thank God that we are not like the sinners in the world?  Not like the gays or not like a young unwed mother or not like an abortion doctor..  Do we have pride in our own righteousness?  If so then we have fallen into the same sin as the Jews 2010 (I think 2014 is more accurate but 2010 is close enough) years ago.

This Christmas let us remember why Jesus came into this world.  He came for sinners.  He came for the broken for the captives.  He came for all people to tell them that no matter what they have done (or thought) that they can be forgiven by faith in him and that he will free them from their bondage from sin..

He came to free me from my bondage to sin.  He came to free me from the pride, lust and hate that fills my heart.  He came to give us fellowship with Himself.

Surprised By Death – Two Jesus

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

It’s weird but I must say that I am surprised by death.  You would think that a person living in the 21st century would be used to death.  It’s all over the news/tv/movies/books and to be honest it does not move me to much.  But when someone that is close to me dies I am always surprised.

Death came into this world because of our sins.  Because of Adam’s sin.  It was not part of the original plan.  It’s part of the curse.  And it sure does feel that way.  I hurt for the loss of my friends and my mentors.

But you know that is what this time of year is all about.

This Sunday we had Pasto Mike Glodo preaching at our church.  He preached on two Jesus.  It was on how so often we disconnect the Jesus of Christmas and the Jesus of the Cross.  The Babe in the manger and the man who turned over tables in the temple.  We try to make Jesus into just a cute little baby and forget about the man.

But death will not let us do this.  Without the Cross and Resurrection the manger is meaningless.

The reason why Jesus came to this earth was to defeat death.  True death, spiritual death.  He came that we might have life and live it to the fullest.

Mrs. Jones, Mr. Robertson and Mr. Tanner each loved life.  And we will miss each one of you but we also rejoice knowing that you are now with Jesus.

Pastor Mark Driscoll has a list of 16 things to help Daddies make Christmas a little more special.

  1. a plan for the holidays to ensure his family is loved and memories are made. Dad, what’s your plan?
  2. to check the local guides for what’s going on to make fun holiday plans for the family. In Seattle it’s here.
  3. to carve out time for sacred events and experiences to build family traditions that are fun and point to Jesus. Dad, is your calendar ready for December?
  4. to not let the stress of the holidays, including money, cause him to be grumpy with Mom or the kids. Dad, how’s your joy?
  5. to give experiences and not just gifts. Dad, what special memories can you make this holiday season?
  6. to manage the extended family and friends during the holidays. Dad, who or what do you need to say “no” to?
  7. to ensure his family is giving generously during the holidays. Dad, who in need is your family going to adopt and bless?
  8. to schedule a big Christmas daddy date with his daughter. Dad, what’s your big plan for the fancy daddy date?
  9. to schedule guy time with his son. Dad, what are you and your son going to do that is active, outdoors, and fun?
  10. to help Mom get the house decorated. Dad, are you really a big help to Mom with getting things ready?
  11. to ensure some holiday smells and sounds. Dad, is Christmas music on the iPod, is the tree up, and can you smell cookies and cider in your house?
  12. to snuggle up and watch some fun shows with the kids, especially the little ones. Dad, is the DVR set?
  13. to take the family on a drive to see Christmas lights while listening to music and sipping cider. Dad, is it mapped out?
  14. to help Mom get the kids’ rooms decorated. Dad, do the little kids get lights or a small tree in their room?
  15. to read about Jesus and pray over his kids. Dad, how’s your pastoral work going with each of your kids?
  16. to repent of being lazy, selfish, grumpy, or just dumping the holidays on Mom. Dad, are you a servant like Jesus to your family?

I know that I have been spending a lot of time on #3 this year.  With Marci only being 2 months a lot of this does not really apply to me yet.  I love #14 decorate the kids room.  What a cool idea!
